BELIEVE

The United Lutheran Church in South Africa is an Apostlic Lutheran Church recognizing the Christian Doctrine, based on the Old and New Testaments of the Holy Bible, the Lutheran Doctrine, the Book of Concord and the three ecumenical symbols, the Nicene, the Athanasius Creeds and the Augsburg Confessions, those parts which are in agreement with the Holy Bible and uphold the Confession of the true faith and love as the greatest law.

Bishop Louis Mphahlele

All ritual and polity of the church are to be governed acceding to the immovable truths of the above mentioned Confession namely that the Holy Word of God [both the Old and the New Testament] shall be the sole authority of the truth in the light of which all doctrine in this Church shall be examined and determined.

The principal calling [duty] of this church shall be the propagation of the true doctrine, which shall manifest itself in the preaching of repentance and the remission [forgiveness] of sins and by the administration of the sacraments of Holy Baptism and Lord's supper customarily practiced by the Apostolic Lutheran Churches. The United Lutheran Church emphasizes the importance of a personal experience of justification by faith [Salvation experience].

It should be noted clearly that unlike other Lutheran Churches in South Africa the United Lutheran Church teaches:
The principal calling of the church is the propagation of the true living doctrine through the preaching of the Gospel of Christ when through the Spirit works repentance of sin and the forgiveness of sin when God gives faith to believe the proclaimed word. The church administers the sacraments of Holy Baptism and the Lord's supper to believers and by the teaching and preaching of God's word, by the leading of the Spirit, moulds believers into effective servants and disciples of the living God.

SAVING FAITH and NEW BIRTH

  1. For you are saved by grace through faith; and that not of yourselves; it is a gift from God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. - Eph.7:8,9
  2. We teach of a faith that saves. - Eph. 2:8
If any man be in Christ, he is a new creation. Old things are passed away; behold all things are become new and all things are of God.
  3. Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God. - Romans 10:17
  4. New birth or reconciliation with God, must take place in the heart of an unbeliever.
Verily, verily I say onto thee, except a man be born again he cannot see the kingdom of God. - John 3:3
That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the sprit is spirit. - John 3:5
Flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God. - 1 Cor. 15:50
Godly sorrow over sin worketh repentance to salvation. - 2 Cor. 7:10
  5. We believe God used Martin Luther to bring a reformation about in the church that had become corrupt. If any of Luther's teachings differ from biblical teaching, the bible supercedes. God's ways are far above mans ways: God's word is far above traditions of men or church denominational teaching.
  6. We believe Jesus has given to the living church, the fellowship of believers, the power to proclaim the forgiveness of sins in His name. - John 20:23
Believers are given the ministry of reconciliation. - 2 Cor. 5:18
Believers are given the Word of reconciliation. - 2 Cor. 5:19
Believers are the Ambassadors for Christ. - 2 Cor. 5:20
Believers are given the keys of the kingdom of heaven. - Mat. 16:19
  7. Forgiveness of sins is not received without faith, by ritual whether by the outward act of receiving communion or the outward act of confession. Without faith it is impossible to please God. - Heb. 11:6
  8. When to a penitent sinner forgiveness of sin is proclaimed in the name of Jesus and by the power of his blood, when God gives faith to believe, his sins are forgiven and God remembers them no more.
There is none other name under heaven given among men, where by we must be saved. - Acts 4:12
Without the shedding of blood, there is no remission of sin. - Heb. 9:22
  9. When one is saved and in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away. All things have become new. - 2 Cor. 5:17
The just shall live by faith. - Heb. 10:38
We walk by faith, not by sight. - 2 Cor. 5:7
Being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Jesus Christ we have peace with God. - Romans 3:24

    THE MISSION OF BELIEVERS

    1. Christ commands: "Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature." - Mark 16:15
Freely ye have received, freely give. - Matt 10:8
Ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a peculiar people, that ye should show forth the praises of Him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light. - 1 Pet. 2:9
    2. We do not teach "ritualistic and Sacramental outward worship", we do not teach a person to be a good church goer or member and other rituals. We teach a living saving according to the principes and doctrines of Christ.
    3. Cross
    4. We believe and respect the teachings of Luther but however we do not believe that Luther is our savior. We do not hide our sins behind the church, but preaches repentance above the culture and tradition of the church.
    5. We teach that the Word of God should awaken the sinner from his/her sinful life. It is possibe that people can be full active members of the church but spiritual dead. These people through the preaching should be awakened. [Spiritual awakening]. The aim of each sermon is to awaken the hearers from the deep sleeping.
    6. If people become awakened they will realize how sinful they are, they will be led to repentance and thirst to hear that their sins are forgiven.
    7. Forgiveness of sins is not received by the ritual of the Sacrament of Holy communion which people hide behind. Forgiveness of sins is to be washed in the heart by the blood of Jesus Christ through the power which he gave to the disciples.
    8. We teach Priesthood of all believers. That we believe which is lost in other Lutheran churches, and replaced by the rituals which is performed only by the Priest as if Luther himself did not teach priests of all believers against the roman Catholic church.
    9. The Word of God is not only preached in the church on Sunday, but should be shared always where the believers come together. The Word of God should be trusted and believed just as they are.
